Street Pastors was launched in September 2008 and is now firmly established as part
of the night scene on the city centre streets of Bath. Street Pastors is a response
from the local Christian community to the problem of vulnerable young people late
at night in the city centre. It operated initially on Friday nights from 10pm to
3-4am. Saturdays were added in the New Year and it is currently running with around
60 Street Pastors from an amazing 26 church congregations. Over half are ladies
and ages range from 19 through to a sprightly 76 year old. It is supported by 30
Prayer Partners.

It has been well accepted by the police, street/taxi marshals, fast ambulance service, pubs and clubs, and not least those out for the evening having a good time. Good contacts are made as we seek to listen, help and care for those who are vulnerable.
On an evening it may be involved in any number of activities, e.g. giving a blanket to a homeless man on a cold winter’s night, persuading a lone woman not to get into a stranger’s car, intervening to prevent a man from ending his life by jumping into the river, caring for the injured as they fall in drunken stupors, giving out flip-flops to prevent girls receiving glass injuries, cleaning the streets of potential glass weapons/injury sources (on average 50 bottles a night), preventing fights, restoring the peace and just providing that calming, reassuring presence on the streets.
